Yep, strange as it might be, IĈm pretty much with Stavros on this one. Sometimes you have to look beyond the faux-piratical hijinks and dodginess and see that the chap actually has a point.
Eve in the last couple of weeks has really come alive; there has been superb dynamism in the political alliances and territorial battles; some real characters have come to light and claimed their fifteen minutes of fame during in-game player-led actions.
The core fiction should represent this; the main empires should refer to the player-led regional alliances in news and press releases. Players in the game are making history, defining laws, seizing the moment and making their bids for glory night after night, and it was a moment of great inspiration to see polaris reacting and playing up to this with the Scope reports.
A hideous shame what happened, and as a player of Eve I still want Polaris to change its mind and bring back Scope. Sure complaints were made, but the response to accusations of bias should be; ôwise-up! Grow-up! Realise that nothing in life is objective and everything we do and say is biased, a news report in a ôgameö is for entertainment and propelling the storyline and sense of involvement. There is no ôrightö to unbiased reporting of fictional events.
Still, I like to make some positive suggestions in these things;
1. The chap who suggested using player-led corps to drive the story has my vote. Oracle should have the chance of assassinating the emperor or whatever. Whacko Caldiri separatists should be approached with option to knock out Gallente planetary domes. PIE and Prometheus should get claim Minmatar systems if they can muster the fleet strength, and leading Gallente corps should definitely get the limelight in driving ideological regime change across the face of Eve.
2. Lets have the dots changing colour on the star map. IĈd like a member of the dev team to have the job of tracking alliance territorial claims and changing the political map to reflect reality. DonĈt care what system is used (presence, common sense, fleet density, big battle results) etc etc. But IĈd just like to see all these hundreds of battleships being lost every week meaning something to the visual feedback on that map. VA held Venal, FA took Venal, TTI split Venal, FA and NVA drove TTI from Venal, TTI and Pirates head back into Venal. How cool to actually watch that happening on a day to day basis? That would be dynamic storyline in action.
3. Race wars à hell yes! I hope it comes to pass. How I would do it is as follows; Empire X fights Empire Y. Concord declares region Z the conflict zone. Over the course of the next couple of weeks pilots from Empire X and Empire Y can blow the crap out of the other race in region Z with no concord interference and no security hits whatsoever. Bounties would be awarded by each government for each enemy ship neutralised. Eve System would run a kill board with the top pilots of each race rated on tonnage of ships killed. At the end of the period Concord would step in and award the region to the Empire with the most successful pilots. TaĈda a dynamic war resolution with in-game affects. Players would become war-heroes or villains. The armaments industry would benefit. And the conflict zone would be hilarious fun for some and an appalling danger for others.
All thoughts and opinions gladly received.
